New Growth on Cypress Avenue: A Young Tree Steps in to Fill Big Shoes
Published on 07 August 2025
A new Monterey Cypress has been planted on Cypress Avenue in Lorne, filling the space left by a large tree that was removed earlier this year due to safety concerns.
The original tree had stood for decades, one of several iconic cypress pines that define the coastal character of the avenue. But in June, arborists confirmed it was at high risk of suddenly falling due to internal decay. With no safe way to treat or support the tree, it had to be removed - a tough call that prioritised the safety of pedestrians, traffic and the nearby playground.
Now, both locals and visitors will notice a sapling of the same species has taken its place. Though still small, the new tree will grow into the same kind of presence as the tree before it.
“The original Cypress had become part of the local identity, so we knew how important it was to replant with care, and to continue the story of trees in this area,” XX XX of the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority said.
In a full-circle move, mulch created from the original tree is also being reused in local conservation works along the coast. It’s a subtle but meaningful way for the old giant to give back to the landscape that sustained it for so many years.
While the new tree won’t reach its full height for quite some time, its planting represents more than just a replacement, it’s a symbol of continuity, care, and connection to place.
And if you’re passing by Cypress Avenue in the coming weeks, you might spot it - a little smaller than its neighbours for now but already beginning to take root.
