Public urged to keep clear of unstable cliffs at Addiscot Beach (Jarosite Point)

The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority is urging people to stay well clear of Addiscot Beach (Jarosite Point) in the Great Otway National Park following the collapse of a significant section of cliff, likely linked to this morning’s earthquake on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Around 100 metres of the cliff face has failed, with approximately 20 metres of rock falling to the base. Large cracks remain in the cliff, making further falls highly likely.

To protect public safety, a closure will be implemented, and people are urged to obey all warning and closure signs.

Parks Victoria and the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority are monitoring the site closely, and are out checking other high-risk areas, as the earthquake may have triggered other cliff falls in the region.

Quotes attributable to Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority Acting Director Environment and Coastal Operations, Leia Howes:

“This is a stark reminder of how quickly our coastline can change, and why it’s critical for people to heed safety warnings.”

"The site is extremely unstable, and even a small movement in the rock could trigger further collapse without warning."

“We are asking the public to stay away from the area until it has been fully assessed, as more rockfalls are possible."
