Point Bunbury access trail complete
Published on 17 September 2024
A new access point for trail users has opened at Point Bunbury in Apollo Bay, creating a safe and accessible route for locals and visitors to explore the spectacular headland.
The new route - starting from the car park on Trafalgar Street - protects environmental and cultural values, while preventing further erosion and minimises public safety risks.
Bollards have been installed to outline the route across a section of the golf course, with safety netting and way finding signage to provide separation from the course.
The new section replaces an informal walking track that was closed to protect the primary dune system, preserve habitat for local fauna, and safeguard cultural heritage.
The closed section of the track will now be left to naturally regenerate, aiding in habitat restoration and supporting the stabilisation of the erosion-affected primary dune.
Our engagement with the Apollo Bay Community Voice during the access trail development has also strengthened our mutual understanding and improved our work together.
Quotes attributable to Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority CEO Jodie Sizer:
“We engaged with the Apollo Bay Gold Club, Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and Apollo Bay Community Voice to create a design that keeps this special part of Apollo Bay safe and accessible for everyone.
Through collaboration, we’ve been able to strike a balance that protects the dune and its history, restores access and achieves the best outcome for the community.
We’re looking forward to seeing locals and tourists enjoy the new track for many years to come.”
Quotes attributable to Apollo Bay Golf Club Secretary Graham Hill:
“It has been a most rewarding experience - working diligently with GORCAPA and their Trails Team - to achieve a great Community outcome. When organisations come together to jointly solve problems, to collaborate in an open way with the Community at the forefront of mind, it is amazing what can be achieved.
We have preserved sensitive land on the southern side of the golf course and opened up a new way for walkers to continue to enjoy the informal Pt Bunbury pathway, with minimal disruption to golfing.
It's a true win-win result. Thank you to all involved for the patience and dedication to work through the issues; and especially to Dick Lythgo, our Club President, for his leadership.”
