Urgent works set to begin at Torquay Surf Beach
Published on 26 November 2024
Work is underway to address significant storm damage to the Torquay Surf Beach seawall, concourse, and ramp, with public safety remaining the top priority.
To prevent further erosion and structural risks, two layers of rock bags will be installed in front of the seawall. These are like the effective measures used at Cosy Corner.
The procurement process for sourcing, filling, and installing the rock bags is complete, with installation set to begin as soon as materials arrive, and conditions allow.
Safety remains a key focus, with exclusion zones established around the damaged areas. Clear signage and hazard bunting are in place, and these safety measures will remain until the works are completed.
Specialist engineers with expertise in marine structures and environmental conditions have been engaged to assess the extent of the damage and recommend long-term remediation options.
To ensure the safety of all beachgoers, Foreshore Rangers are conducting twice-daily patrols to monitor conditions and safety measures.
Quotes to be attributed to Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority Director Infrastructure and Planning Cath Olive:
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we carefully determine the best long-term course of action.”
“These measures, including the installation of rock bags, are a crucial first step in preventing further deterioration.”
“As a responsible land manager, safety must always come first when there is a known public risk, such as a potential landslide or asset failure.”
“We ask all beachgoers to continue respecting the safety measures in place.”
