Loch Ard Gorge steps will remain closed this summer as we continues to evaluate options for this iconic site.

Since assuming management of Port Campbell National Park, including Loch Ard Gorge, on 1 August 2024, we have been working through site-specific environmental factors to understand whether restoring access to the site is possible.

This includes exploring medium—and long-term solutions that ensure safe access while preserving the area’s environmental and cultural values.

The beach access was closed by Parks Victoria in May 2023 following a rock fall over the steps, making the area unsafe for visitors.

An independent geotechnical inspection has confirmed that significant safety risks posed by the cliff's instability remain.

Visitors can continue to enjoy other stunning locations within Port Campbell National Park, such as Gibson Steps Beach, Sherbrook Beach, and Port Campbell Beach. Beaches in the Bay of Islands Coastal Park, including the Bay of Martyrs and Worm Bay, also remain open.

We will work closely with Parks Victoria and Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation to identify options that prioritise public safety and protect the area's cultural heritage.

We urge everyone to respect the closure and follow all fencing and safety signage in place. To stay up to date with the latest parks information please visit: www.parks.vic.gov.au
Quotes to be attributed to Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority Director Infrastructure and Planning Cath Olive:

“As a responsible land manager, we have to take a safety-first approach when there's a known risk of a landslide or cliff collapse."

“We understand the importance of Loch Ard Gorge to the local community and visitors alike, and we’re grateful for everyone’s patience as we navigate the next steps."
