From Monday 11 August, essential works will commence at Lorne Pier to replace ageing timber decking and ensure this iconic coastal asset remains safe, functional, and accessible for all users.

The first stage of works will focus on the lower fishing deck, with old timber decking and capping beams removed and replaced using modern, durable materials. The existing timber, installed when the pier was rebuilt in 2007, no longer meets current structural and environmental standards.

Temporary closures and signage will be in place during the works to ensure public safety. This stage is expected to take around two weeks.

The works are jointly funded by the Department of Transport and Planning and the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority and notably is not part of the Geelong City Deal’s Point Grey Redevelopment.

Secure fencing around Lorne Fishing Co-op building

In addition, temporary fencing will be installed around the former Lorne Fishing Co-op building from Thursday 7 August. This will secure the site while enabling safe internal clear-out works and assessments on the 1949 section of the building. Any viable materials identified may be salvaged for future reuse as part of a new building design. No unauthorised entry is permitted.

There will be no loss of access to the pier or the LAAC during these preliminary works.

We thank the community for their patience and understanding as we carry out these important works.
