High Risk Tree to be Removed in Lorne
Published on 04 June 2025
The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority will be felling the Monterey Cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa) tree located on Cypress Avenue in Lorne due to safety concerns.
A professional arborist assessment has confirmed that the tree is at high risk of significant stem failure, meaning it could fall or break unexpectedly. Unfortunately, there is no way to prune or treat the tree to mitigate this risk. As a result, removal is the only viable option.
The tree will be mulched post-removal and be replaced by the same species of Cypress Tree. The mulch will be repurposed locally to support weed suppression, moisture retention, and soil temperature regulation.
The removal is scheduled for mid-June 2025 and is exempt from the heritage overlay due to the high safety risk. We kindly ask the community to avoid the exclusion zone while the work is underway.
