Annual Community Survey results released
Published on 05 August 2025
We have released the results of its inaugural Annual Community Survey, highlighting how people across the region want to be engaged in shaping the future of the coast and parks.
Conducted between December 2024 and February 2025, the survey invited the community to reflect on their experiences engaging with the Authority and to identify meaningful opportunities to improve that engagement in the future.
The 2024 survey received 174 responses and attracted more than 1,200 visits to our Have Your Say page. More than half of the survey respondents identified as permanent residents living along the Great Ocean Road. Another 28 per cent were holiday homeowners and ratepayers who, although living elsewhere, continue to participate in regional matters and decisions.
The majority of people reported that they are most motivated to get involved when they have a specific interest in a project, when they see an opportunity to contribute to decisions affecting their area, or when directly impacted by an issue.
It was encouraging to see that nearly 70 per cent of respondents had previously taken part in one or more of the Authority’s engagement activities. At the same time, 16 per cent said this was their first time engaging with GORCAPA, reflecting a healthy mix of established and emerging voices.
Respondents also shared common barriers to participation, including limited time, digital and physical access issues, caring responsibilities, and a lack of awareness about when and how to get involved. These challenges were particularly noted by people living outside the region and those with additional accessibility needs.
We’ve carefully considered all feedback and are now taking steps to improve how we engage. Here’s what we’re focusing on:
Starting earlier and being clearer
We’ll involve the community earlier in project planning, and we’ll be upfront about which aspects of a project can be shaped by your input.
Extending our reach
We’re looking at ways to connect with people beyond the immediate coast, including in towns like Colac, Geelong and Melbourne through face-to-face sessions, partnerships with local groups, and more targeted promotion of opportunities to participate.
Making it easier for more people to engage
We’ll offer a mix of in-person and online options, including webinars, short surveys, and virtual drop-ins to make engagement more flexible and inclusive.
Creating a clear, practical guide
To support these improvements, we are developing Join the Discussion: A Guide to Engaging with Us. This plain-language guide will clearly explain how people can get involved in the Authority’s work, what to expect during the engagement process, and how feedback is considered in planning and decision-making.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2024 Annual Community Survey. Your feedback is helping us strengthen how we work with and for the communities of the Great Ocean Road coast and parks.
Quotes to be attributed to Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority Acting Director Community, Public Affairs and Visitor Economy, Brigid Isaac:
“This survey is the start of an ongoing conversation with our community. It’s helped us understand what’s working, where we can improve, and how people want to be part of shaping this special region.”
“We’re incredibly lucky to care for such an iconic part of Australia. Hearing directly from the people who live, visit, and feel connected to the coast and parks helps guide our work and keeps us focused on what matters most.”
