Twelve Apostles

Few places capture the power and beauty of the Great Ocean Road quite like the Twelve Apostles.

Rising from the Southern Ocean, these limestone stacks are one of Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks. Their colours shift throughout the day, from soft gold in the morning to rich orange and red at sunset.

A short walk from the visitor area leads to windswept lookouts with sweeping views across the coastline. Watch waves roll in from the Southern Ocean, see the cliffs change with the light and take in one of Victoria’s most memorable coastal views.

The Twelve Apostles are popular year round, especially during the middle of the day. For a quieter experience, visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Sunset is one of the best times to visit, when the stacks glow against the changing sky.

At dusk, you may also see Little Penguins returning to the beach far below. Their tiny tracks can sometimes be seen in the sand as they make their way back to their burrows.

The Victorian Government has announced that a booking and fee model will be introduced at the new Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre when it opens in late 2026. Planning for the booking system is being shaped through engagement with the tourism sector, local government and tour operators.
