Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary
Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary covers approximately 12.5 hectares of protected reef system offshore from the township of Marengo, near Apollo Bay along Victoria’s iconic coastline.
This sanctuary features the reef system of Little Henty Reef and the nearby islands of Henty and Little Henty — rock platforms sculpted by wave action and now abundant with marine life.
The sanctuary’s management aims to safeguard its outstanding natural values so that this unique marine ecosystem, and the experiences it offers, so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.
What Makes It Special
A rich intertidal reef environment - the sandstone islands and reef edges host rock‑pools, gutters and ledges filled with marine life, from large abalone to tiny periwinkles.
Underwater seaweed “gardens” - large fronds of bull kelp fringe the islands, with vibrant beds of red and green algae beneath.
A unique sheltered channel between the islands - this calmer area supports dense growth of sea squirts, sponges and other filter‑feeders, a rare haven on this rugged shoreline.
Wildlife presence - one of the islands is well‑known as a haul‑out zone for Australian Fur Seals. As such, access onto that island is prohibited to protect the animals and for visitor safety.
Things to do
Snorkelling & Diving
When conditions are favourable, Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary is a fantastic spot for snorkelling directly from Marengo Beach or exploring deeper areas on a dive. The underwater world here reveals a thriving reef system, kelp forests, and abundant marine life.
Note: Be cautious—this is an open ocean environment with strong tidal currents and changing sea conditions.
Boat Tours
Regular tours depart from nearby Apollo Bay Harbour, offering a chance to experience the sanctuary by water. These tours often pass the offshore seal colonies and provide unique views of the rugged coastline and marine habitats.
Coastal Walks
The sanctuary is located along the scenic Great Ocean Walk, a 100+ km trail stretching from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. Walkers can enjoy a mix of clifftop views, lush forest, open heathland, and encounters with diverse coastal ecosystems as they pass through this pristine marine landscape.
Plan Your Visit
Getting there: The sanctuary is just ~3 km from the township of Marengo, near Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road.
Best time to visit: For calmer seas and better conditions for snorkelling/boating, visit in the summer months. Wild seas provide dramatic views, and the area is good for looking out for passing Southern Right Whales along this stretch of coast.
Access: You can access the inner reef from Marengo during very low tides by foot (via Hayley Point), or by boat/craft from the beach.
Staying local: Book accommodation and campsites early in peak season.
Stay safe: Strong tidal currents and sudden weather changes: These can affect snorkelling, diving and boating. When walking on rock platforms, wear grippy footwear, watch for large waves, hold onto stable surfaces, and keep clear of cliff edges and exposed reef zones.
Seal safety: The Australian Fur Seals haul out on one of the islands—do not approach or walk over exposed reef to reach them (it’s prohibited).
Fishing restrictions: The sanctuary is a protected zone—visit the Victoria Recreational Fishing Guide for boundary details
