Set along the eastern edge of Cape Otway, Blanket Bay Campground sits just behind a sheltered beach, with steep hills enclosing the bay and an intertidal reef helping to calm the water. It’s one of the more popular coastal campgrounds in the park, particularly during summer and school holidays.
The campground also connects to sections of the Great Ocean Walk, with access toward Parker Hill and the Cape Otway Lightstation for experienced walkers.

What to expect
- Sheltered beach conditions compared to more exposed sections of coast
- Intertidal rockpools with marine life
- Coastal woodland with regular wildlife sightings, including koalas
- Access to Katabanook Walk through fern gullies and Manna Gum forest
Accessibility
Some campsites are more accessible than others, particularly those on flatter ground closer to facilities.
- Sites 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20 and 21 are within ~40 m of toilets
- Vehicle access available close to these sites on compacted gravel
- Accessible toilet available, along with standard toilet cubicles
Beach access is via stepped paths. The boat ramp provides the most suitable access for wheelchairs and strollers.
Note: Great Ocean Walk-specific camping areas within Blanket Bay are not wheelchair accessible.
Need to know
- Fires permitted in shared fireplaces only (not on Total Fire Ban days)
- Fuel stoves or gas barbecues are recommended
- Bring your own drinking water and firewood
- Firewood collection is not permitted in national parks
- No generators permitted
- Take all rubbish with you
Blanket Bay is located in a bushfire-prone area. Conditions can change quickly — check weather, fire ratings and park updates before your visit.
Getting there
Blanket Bay Campground is approximately a three-hour drive from Melbourne.
Follow the Great Ocean Road and turn onto Lighthouse Road.
