Beach nourishment works will begin this Wednesday, September 17,  at Skenes Creek, with sand carefully transported from Apollo Bay (south of Point Bunbury) to strengthen and protect the foreshore.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard community assets, essential services and coastal environments from erosion and the increasing impacts of storms.

Why it matters
Skenes Creek is a popular coastal destination, with community facilities, visitor infrastructure and natural values all located close to the shoreline. By moving sand from areas of natural build-up to where it’s needed most, the works will help buffer the coastline against storm surges and erosion.

Protecting local wildlife
The Skenes Creek coastline is also home to the vulnerable hooded plover, a small shorebird that nests directly on the sand. Active monitoring will be in place throughout the project to ensure their protection, with measures taken to avoid disturbance to nesting sites.

What to expect
Heavy machinery will be operating along the foreshore during the sand movement. Beach users are asked to follow all safety signage and instructions, and to take extra care around work areas.

Building a resilient coast
The sand nourishment is one of several coastal protection measures underway across the region, designed to maintain safe, accessible beaches for both locals and visitors.
