Demolition works have begun this week at the Apollo Bay Harbour, marking a major milestone in the transformation of the precinct.
Following the safe removal of asbestos earlier in the week, contractors have commenced pulling down old buildings within the depot area, clearing the way for the next stage of works ahead of major construction starting in early 2026.
While the activity on site is now highly visible, it follows months of planning, design and site preparation to ensure works could begin safely and responsibly. Early works and demolition will continue over the coming months, setting the foundations for a revitalised harbour precinct designed to better serve the community, visitors and local industry.
A revitalised harbour precinct
The Apollo Bay Harbour redevelopment is focused on improving public access, enhancing maritime operations and creating a more inviting, functional space that reflects the area’s unique identity as a working harbour and coastal destination.
Community engagement for the project has now concluded, following extensive consultation that helped shape the final design and planning outcomes. Feedback from locals, businesses and harbour users informed the concept to ensure it supports cultural, recreational and commercial activity, while retaining the character that makes Apollo Bay Harbour such an important local place.
With planning and design nearing completion, construction works are scheduled to commence in early 2026.
Project investment and key outcomes
The $12.61 million redevelopment will deliver a significantly improved visitor experience and broaden commercial and recreational opportunities across the precinct, including:
Upgrades and a minor extension to the Apollo Bay Fisherman’s Co-operative building, supporting an improved commercial offering and visitor experience, including an enhanced outdoor terrace with additional seating
New and upgraded public open spaces, including a public viewing deck extending over the depot roof
Improvements to the Port Operations Depot, creating a safer workplace and providing greater visual access to the working harbour and slipway
Maximised public car parking at the Mothers Beach car park, along with improved pedestrian and transport connections throughout the harbour precinct
As the project moves forward, sections of the site will close progressively for safety during construction, with access maintained via alternate routes where possible.
The start of demolition represents a significant and exciting step toward delivering a revitalised Apollo Bay Harbour for the community and future generations.
