It’s almost Christmas and this past weekend I joined the LorneCare volunteers for the final working bee of 2023. I want to acknowledge and thank the dedicated and enthusiastic community members who come to our working bees each month!

LorneCare has been doing a range of environmental work for over 30 years including blackberry removal from the Lily Pond area at Stoney Creek by hand, to the revegetation of many areas along the foreshore and working alongside our Conservation team on a range of weed management.

Several times each year, the LorneCare team up with Friends of Queens Park to work together on projects such as removal of woody weeds in targeted areas. These working bees are not only hard work, but they are also an opportunity to get to know people in the community. We always chat amongst ourselves while we pull out weeds and there is a lovely camaraderie between people working towards a common goal in a place that we all love.

We have very small numbers in our Conservation team so having a group of dedicated volunteers offer their time and support makes a big difference to us.

I would highly recommend going to a local working bee with our staff as they are great fun, good exercise and you will be able to look at the areas in years to come and know that you have played a part in making a difference.
