Submarine Cable Works in Torquay

SUBCO, an independent Australian-owned and operated telecommunications company, is constructing Australia’s first transcontinental subsea data cable. This major infrastructure project will connect Sydney, Melbourne (via Torquay), Adelaide, and Perth.

Works have commenced at Voss’ Overflow Carpark and Elephant Walk for the installation of this new 4,000 km submarine internet cable. Once complete, the cable will significantly enhance Australia’s digital infrastructure by delivering more secure, reliable, and faster connectivity for Victorians.

Extensive surveying, planning, and design work has been undertaken by SUBCO to avoid environmentally sensitive areas and to ensure the protection of the local environment throughout the project.

This infrastructure upgrade also aligns with a key priority of the Surf Coast Economic Development Strategy 2021–2031. All necessary planning approvals are in place, and the sites — including vegetation and garden beds — will be fully reinstated following the completion of works.
