Gibson Steps Reopens to Visitors
Published on 19 February 2026
In welcome news for visitors to the Great Ocean Road, beach access at Gibson Steps officially reopened.
Following a period of closure, specialist inspections and geo-technical assessments have been completed, and the site has been confirmed safe to reopen, and people can once again make their way down to the sand and experience this remarkable stretch of coastline from below the cliffs.
Gibson Steps offers one of the most dramatic vantage points along the coast. Standing at beach level beneath the towering limestone formations is an experience that stays with visitors long after they have arrived home, and we're pleased to restore access to this much-loved destination and thank everyone for their patience while the necessary safety work was undertaken.
Now, with the brand-new Blowhole Lookout, known by its Keerray Woorroong name Poombeeyt Koontapool (Breath of the Whale), also open and welcoming visitors, there's never been a better time to visit this spectacular stretch of coastline.
Update on Loch Ard Gorge
Beach access at Loch Ard Gorge remains closed.
Investigations continue into feasible short - and longer - term options to return access safely. We acknowledge the length of time this has taken and appreciate the community’s ongoing understanding. A further update will be provided once a timeline has been confirmed.
Visitors are encouraged to check current conditions before travelling and to follow all on-site signage.
