Cape Otway Lightstation reopening

The full Cape Otway Lightstation experience will reopen to the public on 16 September following a partial closure over winter to carry out essential works.

The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (the Authority) took on the lease to operate the iconic tourist attraction from 1 July this year, and has since been running accommodation only while works were completed.

The Lightstation team has been working hard behind the scenes throughout the closure and is excited to welcome back day visitors in time for the school holidays.

The Lightstation, built in 1848 and situated on land currently managed by Parks Victoria as part of the Great Otway National Park, is Australia’s mainland’s oldest working lighthouse and has long been a popular Great Ocean Road destination.

Throughout the transition to the new lease, the Authority has prioritised securing local jobs, and ensuring the Lightstation continues to operate as a significant natural, cultural and visitor destination.

The Authority would like to pay tribute to the hard work of past leaseholders, the Bowker family, operating as Tourism Great Ocean Road, who held the lease since the 1990s and made the Lightstation a world-class tourist attraction.

With travel firmly back on the agenda, the Authority looks forward to welcoming new and returning visitors to make the Lightstation a must-see part of their Great Ocean Road adventure.

The Lightstation offers accommodation and tours, and food and beverages at The Lightkeepers café.

Throughout spring, the Lightstation is open to day visitors from Friday to Tuesday, 10am to 5pm.
